jic: So, you're into older women? Seriously, she got a lot right, but she also got a lot wrong.......?

Anon: That would have been one if them, however bearing in mind the quote the other would have been to embrace the principles of direct democracy!

WfW, I agree. And her potency was all over after only a few sort years. But what she did was necessary and should have been built on by her successors. Unfortunately, I think she was the last true Conservative. What followed was socialism in various guises. But, I can still remember the feeling at the time of her departure; the stress in the country was tangible. It was relentless onslaught by the socialists and I think we (normal people, that is) were tired of the incessant confrontation; in the press, in parliament, on tv and radio news. I think we were relieved when Major came in and things calmed down. What we didn't realise was that by allowing appeasing the socialists, to reduce the aggressive atmosphere, we were allowing them to gain the upper hand. That Margaret was able to withstand the burden of her position for so long is remarkable in itself. If she had had more reliable and consistent allies, she might have achieved more; but that's just indulging in what-ifs. Being stiffed by the likes of Heseltine must have completely undermined her confidence; with people like him around, who needed enemies.

jic: In saying there were some things she did wrong, with hindsight one of them was that she, too, was a 'statist' ie she believed in the status quo. Bearing in mind the extract I have used, if only she had 'thought further' and considered direct democracy.

Don't forget the revolting Tory leader who immediately preceded her either, with his local authority 'reforms' he did more to destroy local accountability and local democracy than anything the Labour party tried.

In fact, Thatcher was an anomaly in post war Tory history.

Aye, but wasn't it about then that we were all hysterical about socialist infiltration in local authorities.
